Thanksgiving isn't a Brazilian holiday, but it might as well be. A whole day built around cooking, family and sitting at the table for hours? That's basically a Brazilian Sunday. It's become one of our favorite days of the year to host.
Here are a few ideas for setting a Thanksgiving table that feels warm and full without taking you all week.
Pick a feeling, then a palette
Before you buy anything, decide what kind of table you want. Cozy and rustic? Bright and garden-like? Classic and elegant? That choice makes every other decision easier.
For a harvest look, think warm neutrals with natural textures: wood, woven fibers, linen, a little green from herbs. If you want something less expected, a botanical print or a deep green check feels fresh and still seasonal.
Start with the tablecloth
Thanksgiving is the one meal where a tablecloth really earns its place. It makes a long table look generous, and it handles the inevitable gravy drip. Our Rosemary tablecloth has a soft herb print that feels made for this time of year, and the Jardim Green Check is bold and festive. Both are cut extra wide so they drape nicely over the sides. Hosting at a round table? There's a round Jardim too.
Layer placemats on top
Placemats over a tablecloth add texture and help define each seat when the table gets crowded with serving dishes. Handwoven buriti is our favorite for fall. The golden color goes beautifully with pumpkins, candles and wood. Try the Buriti Straw Placemat for something classic or the Duo Wave if you want the table to be a conversation piece.
If you'd rather keep it practical (and with Thanksgiving, that's fair), our double-sided faux leather placemat wipes clean and comes in warm colors that work well for fall. The Lasso Placemat, in taupe with white embroidery, is another easy, elegant choice.
Napkins and napkin rings
Cloth napkins make a big difference on a holiday table, and nobody misses the paper ones. A simple Classic Linen Napkin works with any palette. Finish each one with a napkin ring. The Buriti Flower and Double Braided napkin rings both have that natural, handmade look that suits the season. A sprig of rosemary or a small name card tucked into the ring makes a sweet place card.
Don't forget the kids' table
If you have little ones coming, give them a table that feels special too, and save yourself from scrubbing cranberry sauce off a tablecloth. Our spill-proof kids placemats wipe clean in seconds and come in sets of four, like Little Farm, Under the Sea and Butterfly Garden. Kids love having their own, and the grown-ups get to relax a little.
Keep the centerpiece simple
There's going to be a lot of food on the table, so the centerpiece doesn't need to do much. A low runner of greenery, a few small pumpkins or pears, and some candles is plenty. Keep everything low so people can see each other, and leave room down the middle for serving platters.
For the cook
Whoever is running the kitchen deserves to look good doing it. A hostess apron keeps you clean through the last-minute gravy, and the kids' versions mean your little helpers can join in. Our Heirloom Légume kitchen towels, with their carrots and beets, feel right at home on a Thanksgiving counter too.
A few hosting tips
Set the table the night before. On Thanksgiving morning the oven is going to have your full attention.
Plan where the serving dishes will go before you set the centerpiece. It's easy to run out of room.
And leave a little space for people to linger after dinner. The best part of Thanksgiving is usually the hour after the meal, when nobody wants to get up.
Happy Thanksgiving from our table to yours.
With love,
Ana & Ana
